ePay (e-Pay) history in Thailand

ePay is a registered service mark in Thailand which Electronic Payment Network (Thailand) Co Ltd has an exclusive right to use, from 2005, without any expiration date, no termination date for as long as the company is alive agreed between the founding members, where e-Pay Malaysia received shares in exchange for complete exclusive turn-key solution including IP (intellectual Property) portfolio for the territory Thailand. Agreements further also grants EPN technology transfer, all software requirements as well as Upgrades. The latter has not been given to EPN by e-PAY (M) SDN BHD.


Electronic Payment Network or as we also call it EPN or e-Pay was a daughter company to ViA Card (Thailand) Co Ltd.



e-Pay did stop its day-to-day operation in November 2015. The mobile phone operators closed 2G and moved to 3G which resulted in that all the POS terminals e-PAY provided in the market become obsolete. .

When ViA Card (Thailand) Co. Ltd., was started (established) in 2005 the name was Payment Solution Company Ltd

 

History of Payment Solution Company Ltd.,

  • Payment Solution Company Ltd was incorporated on 18 January 2005, as “Payment Solution Company Limited” a wholly owned subsidiary of Capital O.K. Co., Ltd. which was a joint venture between Shin Corporation pcl (60%) and DBS (40%), with registered capital of Bath 200 million.

  • Obtained business license from the Ministry of Finance in June 2005 to engage in the business of electronic payment services.

  • Launched “O.K. Cash” per-paid cards in September 2005. 

  • During the period of June-September 2005, increased registered capital to Bath 550 million.

  • Capital O.K. Co., Ltd. sold all of its shares in Payment Solution to Shin Corporation plc. On 19 November 2007.

  • ViA Global Holding AG together with AS "Latvijas Krājbanka" in Riga bought Payment Solution in November 2010 and changed the name to ViA Card (Thailand) Co Ltd in March 2011.

  • ViA Card (Thailand) Company Ltd acquired ePay Electronic Payment Network (Thailand) Co Ltd in January 2011.

  • The main investor behind ViA Global Holding AG, LKB BANK RIGA did declare bankruptcy on December 23, 2011 (Read more.... ) and LKB left the Bangkok operation without any formal communication. The apointed representative and CEO Lars Olof Kanngard was able to save the day-to-day operation and operated ViA Card (Thailand) to end of 2015.

 

e-Pay in the shop

During 9 years (2005 to end of 2015) Electronic Payment Network (e-Pay), the company has built a strong brand- presence around the country with an impressive number of outlets close to 4,000 shops where you could buy any service or product offered by e-Pay Thailand. Back in 2015 you could also buy the new e-money which allows the consumer to fill-up their e-money account provided by the mobile phone operators such as AIS, which actually is WDS, DTAC and True.

The anual sales in e-Pay did reach more than USD 100 million per year

The negative side of e-money is that the merchants are being sidestepped by the operators and do not get their fair commissions for what the consumers will use their top-up for.

This problem and more favorable merchant conditions is one of the benefits for what ViA Card and providing to its merchants.
